Section Progression rules determine a participant’s pathway WITHIN a section. It specifies whether a participant can complete the activities in the section in ANY order, or only in the defined order.

Setting Progression Rules

Progression Rules are set in the section settings:

The screenshot shows 'Edit Section' settings. That includes: title, description, section type, section availability rule, progression within section. The progression section has been expanded to reveal a drop-down menu with two options: open navigation and linear navigation.

There are two types of progression:

  • Open Navigation - participants can complete the tasks/activities in the section in any order they choose
  • Linear Navigation - participants must complete the tasks/activities in the section in the order they are displayed.

Below is a an example of linear progression as displayed to a participant. The second and third activities in the section are locked. The second activity will unlock once the first activity is complete. The third activity will unlock once the second activity is complete.

The image shows a screenshot of a learner view of a course. It has the second page of learning content open to show some introductory text and three activities. The first activity can be opened by the learner, while the other two activities below show a lock icon and cannot be opened.
